Sarah Elizabeth Wansley, Director & Artistic Leader

Sarah Elizabeth Wansley is a New York-based director, producer and educator. She develops new plays and musicals, as well as highly theatrical adaptations of classic works. Sarah is the Artistic Producer at Chautauqua Theater Company and the 2018-2019 Artistic Directing Fellow at the Cleveland Play House.

Recent directing projects Egress by Melissa Crespo and Sarah Saltwick at Cleveland Play House, Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. at Dobama Theatre, The Seagull with the CPH/Case Western MFA students, The Amish Project by Jessica Dickey at Chautauqua Theater Company, Cry Eden at Access Theater (co-created with Patrick Barrett and Tommy Crawford), Ibsanity by Nina Morrison and Godspell by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak at Fordham University and Out at Sea by Slawomir Mrozek at the Drama League's Directorfest. She has directed new work at The Flea Theater, EST / Youngblood, the La Jolla Playhouse's Without Walls Festival, the McCarter Theatre's Youth Ink Festival, Luna Stage, and Pipeline Theatre Company. She has worked as an assistant director for Jackson Gay, Laura Kepley, Kate Whoriskey, Andrei Belgrader, Roger Rees, Rebecca Taichman, Tina Landau and Emily Mann.

She is a 2018 Drama League Resident Artist, a New Georges Affiliated Artist, a 2015 Drama League Directing Fellow and a member of the 2011 Lincoln Center Director's Lab. Sarah received her MFA in Directing from UCSD under acclaimed Romanian director Gabor Tompa and a BA in English Literature from Columbia University (summa cum laude). She is an Adjunct Faculty member at Fordham University and a Teaching Artist with BAM, the Center for Arts Education and ArtsConnection. Upcoming projects include A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Chautauqua Theater Company and The Amish Project at PlayMaker’s Repertory Company.
